Hardscaping is the permanent structure of a landscape — patios, walkways, driveways, steps, retaining walls, pool decks and stone fireplaces. Topo d'Oro designs and installs hardscape across Evanston and Chicago's North Shore in natural stone, engineered paver and stone veneer, built on base assemblies sized for Chicago's freeze-thaw cycle. Founder César R. is a hardscape and outdoor living specialist with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and stonework is done by our own crews rather than subcontracted out.

Why hardscape fails in Chicago — and how we build against it

Almost every failed patio in this region failed underneath, not on top. Chicago clay holds water. Water freezes. Frozen ground lifts, and anything set on an undersized base lifts with it — pavers tilt, joints open, stone cracks at the mortar line, and a two-year-old patio starts to look ten.

We build the part you never see. Excavation to the depth the assembly and soil require, compacted aggregate base in lifts, geotextile separation over clay where it is warranted, positive pitch away from the house, and edge restraint that actually restrains. Retaining walls over four feet get engineered drainage behind them, because a wall without drainage is a dam.

Patios, walkways and driveways

A patio should be sized to the furniture that will actually live on it. We routinely find homeowners with a twelve-by-twelve slab trying to hold a dining table for eight. Layout starts with the program — dining, lounge, grill, fire — and works outward to a dimension that fits the house and the lot.

Walkways are set for the way people move, with tread and riser dimensions that stay comfortable in the dark. Driveways and aprons are built to hold vehicle load, with paver or stone selections and base depths specified accordingly, and with permeable options where a village limits impervious coverage.

Retaining walls, steps and grade changes

Sloped North Shore lots and lakefront bluff properties frequently need grade managed rather than fought. Retaining and seat walls turn an unusable slope into terraced, level, usable ground.

We build in segmental block, natural stone and poured concrete with stone veneer, with drainage stone, filter fabric and drain tile behind the wall. Walls that require engineering get engineered drawings, and stamped plans are prepared where the village requires them.

Stone fireplaces, veneer and pool decks

An outdoor fireplace is masonry first and amenity second — footings below frost line, correct firebox and flue geometry, and veneer detailing that sheds water instead of trapping it. We build full masonry fireplaces, fire pits, chimneys and seat-wall surrounds, and we clad stoops, foundations, columns and piers in full-bed and thin-set stone veneer.

Pool decks get slip-resistant surfaces, coping detailed to the pool structure, correct pitch to deck drains, and stone that stays comfortable underfoot in July.

Frequently asked

How much does a stone patio cost in the Chicago area?

Cost is driven by square footage, material, how much excavation and drainage the site needs, and access to the back of the property. A straightforward paver patio on a flat lot with good access is at the lower end; irregular bluestone with steps, walls and grade work sits well above it. We walk the property and quote in writing. How long does hardscape last in Chicago's freeze-thaw climate?

Properly built, decades. The variable is the base, not the surface. A stone or paver surface set on a correctly excavated, compacted and drained base will outlast the same material dropped on four inches of gravel by many years, which is why our estimates specify base depth rather than leaving it to chance.

Do I need a permit for a patio or retaining wall?

It depends on the village and the scope. Most North Shore municipalities regulate impervious surface coverage, setbacks and any retaining wall over a set height — commonly four feet. We identify the requirements for your address and prepare and submit the drawings.

Pavers or natural stone — which should I choose?

Pavers offer consistent dimension, a wide color range and generally lower installed cost. Natural stone gives you variation, larger unbroken surfaces and a look that reads as permanent. Both perform here when the base is right. We bring samples on site so you decide in daylight against your house.

Can you fix a patio that has settled or heaved?

Often, yes. We lift and reset settled areas where the base is salvageable, and rebuild where it is not. We will tell you honestly which one your patio needs.

What time of year can hardscape be installed?

Roughly March through November in the Chicago area, weather and ground conditions permitting. Design and estimating happen year-round, and winter is the best time to get on the spring schedule.
